Next stop: The beautiful Caribbean coastline

One of my goals for 2016 is to travel more for pleasure. My goal is to take two larger trips this year and I’m happy to report that I’m now half-way to completing my goal thanks to a recent trip to Mexico with my good friend Leanne from Manitoba!

All-inclusive winter vacations are popular among Canadians but this was my first time trying one. Why did I wait so long? Because I’m not a lie on the beach and suntan all day kind of girl. I’m much too antsy for that. I like to get off the beaten path and explore my surroundings – and do adventurous stuff!

So needless to say, my favourite part of the trip was our day excursions off the resort.

We had a cultural day where we participated in a traditional Mayan ritual ceremony, rappelled into a cenote and swam in there, enjoyed a traditional Mayan lunch and toured the Ek Balam Mayan Ruins. Fact: Ek Balam is Mayan for black jaguar. We also climbed the 100-plus steep stone steps up to the top of one of the old temples.

We also had an adventure day where we visited the Xplor theme park. Here we zipped over the trees and through waterfalls on several zip lines; put our driving skills to the test in amphibious vehicles (kind of like side by side vehicles) through caves and water; explored underground caves in rafts; and swam in the stalactite rivers. Fact: A stalactite is an icicle-shaped formation that hangs from the ceiling of a cave, and is produced by precipitation of minerals from water dripping through the cave ceiling. Most stalactites have pointed tips.

Now I will admit that I did enjoy relaxing on the beach and by the pool as well. There were a lot of activities to enjoy on the resort.

Here are some photos from my fun Mexican vacation!
